If you’re worrying about the horde of aging "baby boomers" about to overwhelm the Social Security system, maybe the focus should be on how we can take on the increase in numbers for Social Security. It won’t be easy!
New studies show that those who immigrate to the good ole’ United States, both legally and illegally, become more fertile once here than they were on their native countries. As a matter of fact, without these prolific immigrants, the national fertility rate still would be two children on average – just enough to replace mom and dad.
Our newcomers (both legal and illegal) and their offspring add about 2.3 million people to the U.S. population each year. The Center for Immigration Studies has released a study comparing the fertility of immigrants in the U.S. to the fertility of women in their home countries. It shows the highest rate of fertility among those women who aren’t legally supposed to be here in the first place.
Studies show that the average birth rate for women of childbearing age is 3.1 for illegals, compared to 2.6 for legal immigrants. Both figures are higher than the average fertility for U.S. citizens – about two children per female. Worst of all, the study shows that women from other lands had 2.9 children on average here, compared to 2.3 in their homeland.
The fertility rate for Mexican women in the United States averages 3.5 children per woman, compared to 2.4 children in Mexico. Among Chinese immigrants fertility is 2.3 in the U.S. compared to 1.7 in China. Immigrants from Canada have 1.9 children compared to 1.5 children they have on average a few miles north of our border.
Studies indicate this happens. When people feel more optimistic about their future, they tend to have more children. The opportunities they see in America also stimulates the desire for more children. Educational and cultural factors found in America also play a major role.
The total foreign-born population in the U.S. is now over 31 million, a 57 percent increase since 1990 – plus the fact that 8 million got here illegally. However, the last 30 years of immigration has permitted the U.S. to continue its growth. It is reported that illegal entry is responsible for 380,000 babies in 2002 – the last time a study was made.
All of us know why this is happening – America is still the land of opportunity for people of all races and political persuasion. Children born to illegal aliens in the U.S., gain immediate citizenship and they can then block any attempt at deportation of their parents and sponsor them for permanent residence.
Ain’t America great?
