The Green Hills Women’s Shelter (in Trenton and Chillicothe) is one of 43 shelters in the State of Missouri which has been selected to participate in the Domestic Violence Shelter Tax Credit Program. Green Hills Community Action Agency was recently notified of the approval of a $46, 511 tax credit allotment for the period of July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007.

The Domestic Violence Shelter Tax Credit is available to Missouri taxpayers who donate at least $100 dollars to a qualified shelter during the taxable year. A taxpayer will be allowed to claim a tax credit against their state tax liability equal to 50 percent of the amount the taxpayer contributes to the qualified shelter.

Eligible tax credit contributions include: cash, land, buildings, stocks, bonds and other marketable securities. In-kind donations, such as clothing, furniture or services are not eligible for a tax credit under this program. However, donors can sell any of these items to generate cash which can then be donated to the shelter as a qualified donation. Once the tax credit is authorized, the taxpayer will receive confirmation in the form of an eligibility certificate which the taxpayer attaches to their Missouri state tax return.

Interested taxpayers can contact Scott Long or Cheryl Leffler through Green Hills Community Action Agency’s central office in Trenton at (660) 359-3907 or through the Chillicothe Satellite Shelter at (660) 707-0042 to request a Domestic Violence Shelter Tax Credit Form or to obtain additional information. Through the use of available tax credits, residents of the Green Hills area can support the local women’s shelters which ultimately allow the shelters to increase services and work to eliminate repeat domestic violence incidents.

Green Hills Community Action Agency is a private not for profit organization committed to providing access to resources necessary to overcome barriers, enabling families to prosper and thrive in their communities.
