Firemen were called to the courthouse last Thursday when the halls filled with smoke, due to a problem with the elevator motor. Above, the firemen are prying the door of the elevator open. The lightning bolt last Tuesday which caused damage to several businesses along Main Street could very likely have been the reason for the elevator problem, said local electrician Kyle McBroom. The elevator repairman came Friday to assess damage and has ordered a new motor. Jerry Frost of Frost Insurance was notified of the claim.

The damage from the lightning was widespread. Two additional businesses which sustained damage from last Tuesday’s bolt of lightning were 3B Silversmiths and Grand River Title.

And … at the east end of Grand Street, Gene Taul reported that a gift bag designed to play music when opened started playing a tune when the bolt hit. The Tauls also lost several electronic appliances and a picture was jolted off the wall.
