The Winston Historical Society will present Jesse James Days July 14-15-16 at the Winston City Park.
On Friday, July 14, the Historical Society cook shack opens at 6:30 p.m. with sandwiches, cake and ice cream. At 7 p.m. gospel music will be performed by the Ministerial Alliance.
On Saturday, July 15, KAW Fire District will host a biscuits and gravy breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Winston Fire House and there will be a lawn tractor pull, for info, 660-749-5694 or 660-605-1883. Winston Scouts are in charge of a flag raising ceremony at 9 a.m. A baby show will be held at 9:30 a.m. For information about the baby show call Kelly Uthe at 660-749-5215.
A special pictorial stamp cancellation will be offered in the park from 10 am to 12 noon by Winston Postmaster, Steve Lee.
Parade participants are asked to pre-register. Send registration to KAW Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 135, Altamont, 64620, before July 15. (See this week’s paper or Pony Express Shopper for clip-out).
Line up for the parade starts at 12:30 at the Winston school. The parade will begin at 1 p.m. with trophies for first, second and third place awarded by a panel of judges afterward.
Virgil Julian will be the historical speaker at 2:30 p.m. in the depot. Tours of the Depot are scheduled all day long Saturday.
Winston Players will have skits, games and fun for kids, raffles, and drawings for gifts from 3-5 p.m. Flea market booths and food vendors will be set up on the grounds, for info call 660-749-5725.
Mic-O-Say Dancers will perform at 5 p.m. Country Gone Krazy will take the stage at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs.
Sunday, July 17, will begin with "Worship in the Park" at 11 a.m., followed by a carry-in basket dinner.
Winston offers pictorial cancellation
To commemorate Jesse James Days, the Winston Post Office will offer a pictorial cancellation July 15.
Postmaster Steve Lee announced the pictorial cancellation will be available in the Winston City Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Those who cannot attend the event, but who wish to obtain the cancellation, may submit a mail order request. Requests must be postmarked no later than 30 days following the requested pictorial cancellation date. All requests must include a stamped envelope or postcard bearing at least the minium First-Class postage (39 cents per envelope or 24 cents per postcard). Items submitted for cancellation may not include postage issued after the date of the requested cancellation. Such items will be returned unserviced.
Customers wishing to obtain a cancellation should affix stamps to any envelope or postcard of their choice, address the envelope or postcard to themselves or others, insert a card of postcard thickness in the envelope for sturdiness, and tuck in the flap. Place the envelope or postcard in a larger envelope, and address to: 1881 James Robbery Station, Postmaster, 101 W. 2nd St., Winston, MO 64689-9998.
After applying the pictorial cancellation, the Postal Service returns the envelope or postcard through the mail. Customers who want their serviced item returned under protected cover should include a larger, stamped, self-addressed envelope.
