The graduating Class of 2006 of Winston High School had seven young men earn their Eagle Scout Rank this year, all members of Troop 167. Eagle Scout is the top rank in the Boy Scout program with only about 1% of the boys that enter the scouting program receiving this rank. Having seven Eagles in one class is an unusual accomplishment, according to scouting officials. It’s an even more impressive feat considering there were only nine young men in the entire graduating class at Winston. In addition Troop 167 had another Eagle Scout graduate this year from Pattonsburg High School.

"In my 30-years of scouting, I can tell you I have never heard of such a feat," said Tom Smotherman, Scout Executive of the Pony Express Council, located in St. Joseph. "Since only two to four of every 100 registered Boy Scouts ever earn Scouting’s highest award, the Winston accomplishment is truly remarkable."

Troop 167 is under the guidance of Scoutmaster Joe Michael. In order to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout the young man must do a service project for his community, church or school. The Eagle projects done for the school and community of Winston by these seniors were as follows:

Jared Lee <197> New sign for Winston High School.

Kenny Lee <197> Handicap accessible ramp for Winston United Methodist Church.

Daniel Williams <197> Basketball goal and court for Winston City Park.

Jimmie Steele <197> Flag pole for baseball diamond at the school.

Derek King <197> New sign for Alta Vista Baptist Church at Winston.

Scott Neth <197> Covered and redid the visitors dugout at the Winston Ball diamond.

Jody Michael <197> Roof over the bleachers at the Winston ball diamond.

Joshua Nitzschke <197> Made a "Welcome to Winston" sign for the town.

The seven Eagle Scouts at Winston earned 217 combined merit badges and Joshua earned 22 for a total of 239. Kenny Lee earned four Eagle palms; Jody Michael received three; and Derrick King earned two.

According to Mr. Michael, there are 16 scouts in Troop 167 presently.
