New informational displays featuring pioneer Samuel Cox, Old West outlaw Johnny Ringo, and Hollywood versions of the Frank and Jesse James legend are on exhibit
The antique 1889 Squirrel Cage Jail is open to the public as a local visitors’ center during the summer season. Kim Turley offers tours on behalf of the Daviess County Historical Society from 10am to 4pm Wednesdays through Saturdays.
New informational displays featuring pioneer Samuel Cox, Old West outlaw Johnny Ringo, and Hollywood versions of the Frank and Jesse James legend are on exhibit in the sheriff’s residence, along with a 7-panel display on Daviess County’s contributions to the Civil War. A $1 donation is suggested for each person touring the jail, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Brochures promoting other travel stops elsewhere in Missouri are also available. For more information or to schedule a visit by appointment, call Mrs. Turley at the jail, 660-663-4098.
The Squirrel Cage Jail is owned by Daviess County, with maintenance and operations managed by the Daviess County Historical Society. Two rooms in the upper story of the sheriff’s residence will soon become a home for the Daviess County Geneological Society after room renovations are completed. For more information about this group, call DCGS President Lanita Sconce Smith, 660-684-6174.
