The Bulldog varsity boys finished fifth in the Grand River Conference Golf Tournament held Monday at Stanberry.
South Harrison, which finished with four individuals in the top seven golfers, ran away with the team title for the second straight year, shooting a combined 312 to beat runnerup Albany by 53 strokes. Worth County finished third with 369, followed by Hamilton’s 374, and Gallatin with 375.
“As a team, it’s disappointing we didn’t finish higher than fifth,” said Coach Elbert. “Looking at the team totals, it’s easy to see how we could have made up several strokes and finished as high as second,” he admitted.
Bird topped Gallatin golfers with a 76, and trailed only Tucker Perkins of South Harrison, who copped the medalist award with a 73. Bird’s second place finish at conference was his second in two years. His second-round 35 was the best score of the day on the back nine.
McBroom continued a run of consistent performances by shooting 92 for the day. Ward finished with a round of 100 for the Bulldogs. Wood shot 107 and Meseberg came in with a 126.
Gallatin’s junior varsity squad combined for a third place finish Tuesday in the jayvee conference tournament held in Albany. The Bulldogs shot 201 to finish behind South Harrison (176) and Maysville (199).
Robert Rhoades shot 48, good enough for eighth place overall. Daniel Lawson carded a 49 for ninth place, followed by Matt Pottorff’s 50. Bryce Carder shot 54 and Alex Critten chipped in 58 for the Bulldog jayvees.
McBroom matched his low meet score of the year and posted a team-low 42 in a four-team meet held last Wednesday at Stanberry. Bird posted a 43, followed by Ward 46, Wood 49 and Meseberg 60.
As a team, the Bulldogs finished with a score of 180, third behind Worth County (166) and Stanberry (173), but ahead of Northeast Nodaway (202).
In jayvee action, Robert Rhoades shot 50, followed by Daniel Lawson 54, Matt Pottorff 55, Logan Merrigan 68 and Jon Youd 69.
Gallatin golfers are competing in the Class 1, District 7 Tournament today in Plattsburg. Qualifying teams and individuals will vie for state medals May 15-16 at Island Green Golf Course in Republic, Mo.
