The theft had been under investigation by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department for the past month
A safe was recovered Saturday from a creek in southern Daviess County. The safe had been stolen from the home of Mr. And Mrs. Rick Schroff of Bethany on March 30. The theft had been under investigation by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department for the past month, according to the Bethany Republican-Clipper.
Three persons have now been arrested in connection with the theft of the safe, which contained a large amount of cash, coins and other valuables.
Paul Curtis Ellington Jr., 24, Cameron, was arrested Friday on a Harrison County warrant charging him with the class C felony of burglary in the second degree. Jeremiah Burnett, 23, Cameron was taken into custody Saturday by Clinton County authorities on a charge of receiving stolen property. Charges are also expected against a Stewartsville man who was being held at the Pattonsburg jail on unrelated charges.
Harrison County Deputy Josh Eckerson said the investigation got its first break several days ago when an individual attempted to pass a 1934-vintage $1,000 bill at a bank in Liberty. The bill allegedly had been one of the items being kept in the safe.
On Thursday the sheriff’s department was notified that a man had cashed in some silver coins at a bank in Cameron. The man’s residence was searched by Cameron police officers, and several stolen items, including a silver bar, were recovered. Two arrests were made on Monday, with one arrest pending.
Deputy Eckerson said the questioning of the suspects led to the recovery of the safe from a creek in southern Daviess County on Saturday. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the recovery effort.
The case developed after the sheriff’s department obtained a bank surveillance photograph of a man passing the $1,000 bill at a bank in Liberty, according to Harrison County Sheriff George Martz. When the sheriff’s department was notified by the Cameron police officers that silver coins had been cashed at the bank in Cameron, Eckerson drove to Cameron and identified the suspect as the same man who cashed the $1,000 bill in Liberty.
Ellington is being held in the Harrison County Jail on $25,000 cash only bond. Jeremiah Burnett is being held in the Clinton County Jail.
