Funeral services for Charles Pettijohn will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at the Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany. Burial will be in Miriam Cemetery, Bethany. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie’s name are encouraged to the Harrison County Track and Trail Foundation and/or the First Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

Charles E. Pettijohn, 82, Bethany, died Sunday, April 23, 2006, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mr. Pettijohn was born Sept. 26, 1923, in St. Joseph, the son of Cory and Martha “Mattie” (Bishop) Pettijohn. He grew up in King City, where his father founded the Ford dealership in 1924. After graduation from King City High School in 1941, he served four years in the Army.

Mr. Pettijohn returned to Missouri and married Velma Mae Huffman on Feb. 22, 1948. They moved to Albany, where Charlie established Pettijohn Ford. In 1963, he spent one year in Phoenix, Ariz., working in the auto industry, prior to moving to Bethany and purchasing the local Ford dealership in 1964.

A long-time businessman and civic leader, Mr. Pettijohn and his son, Tom, expanded the business to the point where it now employs 60 people and sells virtually every domestic line of cars.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Bethany.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Velma; two sons, Charlie Jr., Springfield, and Tom, Bethany; one brother, Jim Pettijohn, Springfield; and two grandchildren.
