It’s a tradition in Carl’s battalion that upon retirement a Masterchief hand down their anchors to someone they want to see promoted. Retired Masterchief J.D. Johnson gave Carl his anchors and told him that he’d make it someday. Carl said his only regret was that two special people were not able to attend the event his wife Sherri was not able to be there to pin the Masterchief medal on him, and retired Masterchief Johnson was not able to be present to see his prediction fulfilled.’ target=’_blank’>
