Gallatin varsity golfers got the monkey off their backs last Wednesday by defeating Winston and Plattsburg in a tri-meet held at Daviess County Country Club. The Bulldogs, led by Dillon Bird and Andy Ward, combined for their lowest team total of the year in winning for the first time.
Bird carded a 35 to win the medalist award by six strokes over Ward, who posted a 41. Winston’s Jared Lee and Devin deJong each shot 43. Derrick McBroom and Brandon Meseberg shot rounds of 45 for Gallatin. Ross Wood chipped in a 51 for the Bulldogs.
In jayvee action, Robert Rhoades shot 48 to lead the Bulldog reservers, followed by Matt Pottorff and Bryce Carder, each with 49; Alex Critten 58, Jon Youd 62 and Logan Merrigan 65.
In tournament action over the course of the last week, Gallatin finished 10th of 12 schools at Plattsburg last Thursday, and placed 8th of 16 schools in Monday’s Sedalia Sacred Heart Tournament.
Thursday’s Plattsburg format featured individual, two-man best ball and two-man best shot play. Bird shot 83 to finish out of the medal hunt in the individual format. Ward and Meseberg struggled in the best shot format and finished with an 87. McBroom and Ross combined for an 84 in the best ball competition.
Bird recovered from a slow start Monday to post an 83, good enough for 13th place medalist at Sedalia. The course challenged Gallatin’s other four varsity golfers but they responded well, said Coach Chris Elbert.
McBroom and Meseberg each shot 95 for the day. Wood posted a 99 and Ward finished with a round of 100.
Meseberg and McBroom shot their best golf of the season yesterday, but it wasn’t enough for Gallatin to finish above South Harrison and Albany in a three-team meet held in Gallatin. Meseberg and Bird each shot rounds of 40 for the Bulldogs, who combined for a team total 165. Albany shot 162 and South Harrison bested both with a 147.
McBroom and Ward posted scores of 42 and 43, respectively. Wood shot 49 for the GHS varsity.
Gallatin junior varsity scores were: Pottorff 47, Carder 52, Daniel Lawson 60, Rhoades 63 and Critten 64.
The Bulldogs will compete in the Cameron Tournament on Friday, and will host Stanberry and Plattsburg at DCCC on Monday.
