Agricultural producers and landowners who thought they might miss an opportunity to enroll highly erodible and other fragile cropland into the popular Conservation Reserve Program can breathe a little easier, as the head of the local Farm Service Agency said two sign-up deadlines have been extended.
“Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns recently announced the extension until April 28 of the sign-up periods for both the CRP general sign-up and ‘REX,’ the special CRP re-enrollment and extension imitative,” said Kirby Payne, executive director of Daviess County Farm Service Agency.
The Conservation Reserve Program is USDA’s largest and most successful conservation program, according to Payne. “CRP protects fragile cropland from erosion and improves the nation’s natural resources,” he said.
CRP general sign-up 33 began on March 27, and is open to all producers and landowners with eligible land. The special re-enrollment and extension initiative is limited to producers who have CRP contracts expiring on Sept. 30, 2007. Both sign-ups were scheduled to end on April 14.
“Extending the deadlines will afford producers extra time to weigh the advantages of enrolling land in the program or make their contract offers more competitive,” said Payne.
Detailed information about both the general sign-up and re-enrollment or extension initiative is available from the staff of the Daviess County Farm Service Agency office. Fact sheets and other information are also available on the agency’s web page at
