The City of Gallatin recently installed a new storm siren at the corner of South Daviess and West Mill in the City Pool parking lot. Gallatin Police Chief Mark Richards has provided the following information as to when the siren is to be used and where people without a storm shelter can go.
The general departmental guidelines for the storm siren are that it will be set off whenever a tornado warning has been issued for the Gallatin area. When the storm siren is activated you may also hear or see emergency vehicles roaming the streets as a secondary warning method.
When the storm siren has been activated people that have no available shelter can go to the basement of the Daviess County Library where an emergency shelter will be set up.
The Gallatin Police will test the city storm siren at 10 a.m. on the first Monday of each month unless the temperature is at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or if we are experiencing severe weather.
If for some reason people are unable to hear the City Storm siren it is suggested that they look into a weather radio that will alert them to an approaching storm. If people have any further questions regarding the city storm alert system they can contact the Gallatin Police Department at (660)663-3580.
Chief Richards added that about 75 people attended the weather spotter training on April 4 and that the police department appreciates the communities support.
