The 62nd Annual Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting was held at the Gallatin R-5 High School on March 27.
The Conservation Farmer Award was presented to Gary Moulin, Gilman City. Mr. Moulin has completed a variety of conservation practices to save soil. Lloyd Payne accepted the award in Mr. Moulin’s absence.
Nineteen poster winners were awarded cash prizes. The Soil & Water Stewardship 2006 poster contest theme was "Water Wise."
The top four county winners, one from each grade, in the contest were Ryan Warren, third grade, Gallatin R-5; Kirbie Crouse, fourth grade, Gallatin R-5; E.J. Owings, fifth grade, Gallatin R-5; and Brianna Heldenbrand, sixth grade, Winston R-6.
Other poster winners were: Gallatin – Lauren Taylor; North Daviess – Crystal Broughton, Garrett Hartley, Marissa McNeely, and Breanna Jones; Pattonsburg – Kristen Booth, Abby Feck, Joel Teel, and Courtney Warford; Tri-County – Tatumn Skinner, Leeza Siddoway, and Bailey Souders; Winston – Sam Wilkerson, Kayla Eisman, and Denise Weigand.
Those attending enjoyed a free catered meal provided by the soil district; Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, Gallatin; BTC Bank, Gallatin and Pattonsburg; and Home Exchange Bank, Jamesport.
Doug Mertens, NK Brand Seed, Columbia, was the evening speaker. Mr. Mertens discussed how everyone uses agricultural products everyday without even realizing what is in the product. Mr. Mertens noted that most children stereotype all farmers as wearing overalls, straw hats, and that all barns are red. Mr. Mertens showed a variety of products that have ingredients made from soybeans, corn and animal fats.
Supervisors’ election was held for Area II and IV. Jim Clark and Brent Adams were elected to serve a four year term.
Several door prizes were given away to conclude the annual meeting.
