Dear Editor:
Once again county government is working at it’s worst.
Just the fact that the Daviess County commissioners were willing to take money from the families that had lost a child, and had several others injured is disgraceful and unforgivable regardless of whether the state says it is legal or not.
The county commissioners stated that if a ruling came down that the county should pay the interest to the family and/or families, they would reimburse them out of the general revenue. Well that ruling came down and guess what, the commissioners refused to pay the money. I guess my question to the commissioners is WHY? Why have they refused to pay this money as they originally stated they would.
Who appealed the ruling, you the commissioners? And if so why did you appeal the ruling. Why didn’t you think about getting the money to the rightful owners, the families that had already went through untold sorrow from the loss and injury of their children.
Why didn’t the commissioners or Mrs. Adkins inform the parties of what they should do in respect to placing the money in a separate interest bearing account. That would have been the moral and ethical thing to do.
Let me put it to you this way, if the state of Missouri said it was o.k. for these families to come and take $12,000 from each of you, the commissioners and Mrs. Adkins, would that be alright. Would you think that would be morally and ethically right.
I THINK NOT!!
To the families involved in the accident, we send you our best wishes, and pray that you get the justice you deserve.
This would be a good time for the families involved to petition Jefferson City for the repeal of this questionable law. These monies should automatically go into a separate escrow account. The money doesn’t belong to the county and should have never gone into the circuit court registry.
Once again, election time is coming. Remember the names of the people running for office, and remember how they have conducted themselves. You may want to vote for a change.
Something else to think about, is it time for term limitations in Daviess County. Many of us think that it is. Actions of politicians speak volumes.
Thank you,
Michael Hunt, Sr.
