Gallatin R-5 wrestlers, basketball players and cheerleaders were under the spotlight Friday night as athletes, coaches, parents and supporters met in the R-5 gym for the 2005-06 Winter Sports Banquet. GHS athletic director Chris Elbert was master of ceremonies. Darryl Wilkinson gave the invocation prior to the meal. Basketball cheerleader sponsor Crystal Crouse introduced her squad of Lacey Curtis, Sydney Elbert, Hannah Huffman and Samantha Mott. The following team managers and statisticians were recognized over the course of the evening: Sheldon Turley, basketball camera man; Melissa Everman and Nicole Everman, wrestling; Katie Patton (4 yr. letter), Whitney Ray (4 yr. letter) and Kari Youtsey, basketball. Head coach Phillip Limb introduced his wrestlers, saying that the 2005-06 Bulldogs exceeded his expectations in finishing 10-4 in dual matches, second in the GRC Tournament, first in the Albany Tournament, and sent four grapplers to state. The Bulldogs finished with seven wrestlers with at least 20 victories. Wrestlers recognized were Clayton Baker (four-year letter), Logan Corwin, Dale Ray Curtis, Nathan Gann, Andrew Hood, Daniel Horvatin, Bradley Jones, Marc Maillet, Trey Newberry, Jordon Phelps, Trae Pyfrom, Riley Rains, Devin Robinson, Cody Selby and Jacob Smith. Coach Limb also thanked assistant coaches Barron Gann and Matt Morrison for their help and support. Special wrestlers awards were given to: Marc Maillet, most pins, wins, takedowns, near falls, and Coach’s Award; Riley Rains, most reverses and escapes; Clayton Baker, most team points and best winning percentage, and Outstanding GHS Wrestler; Nathan Gann, Rookie of the Year; and Cody Selby, Sportsmanship Award. Prior to introducing GHS basketball programs, Mr. Elbert told the audience that he had received copies of three letters sent to the Missouri State High School Activities Association from area basketball officials, praising Bulldog players and coaches for their sportsmanship during games in which they had worked. Coach Martin Sweatman, who was assisted by Jeremy Hobbs, introduced the boys basketball squad that finished 18-8 on the season, including 11-0 at home. The Bulldogs were Co-GRC champs, Gallatin Invitational champions and runnersup in the district tournament. Boys roundball players recognized were Kyle Croy, Kayle Hefley, Tet Maillet, Matt Pottorff, Robert Rhoades, Derrick Sprague, Derrick Teel, Ethan Walton, Ross Wood, Andy Ward, Mitchell King, Robert Hanson, Jon Garlick, Jon Brown, Kevin Turley, Brett Wilkinson, Colt Bohannon, Nic Burrell, Andrew Adkison, Kyle Andrew and Dillon Bird. Freshman Kayle Hefley received the Rookie of the Year award from coaches. Senior Kyle Andrew was Most Improved. Brett Wilkinson was named Defensive Player of the Year. Nic Burrell received the Hustle Award, free throw award, and Most Valuable Player award. Adkison was the team’s top rebounder and scorer and received recognition as Offensive Player of the Year. Burrell was a team captain and also received spots on radio all-star squads from KAAN, KMZU and KKWK. Adkison, also a captain, was named to the KAAN and KKWK teams, and received second-team all-state honors from the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Dillon Bird was recognized as a four-year letterwinner. The Lady Bulldog basketball squad, under the direction of head coach Rick Lin and assistant Cindy Boles, finished 20-9, 5-3 in the GRC, third in the Gallatin Invitational, second in the Hamilton Invitational, and first in Class 2, District 16. The junior varsity squad finished with a record of 11-5. Coach Lin credited his players with keeping a positive attitude, and continuing to support each other through tough times this past season, and he thanked his seniors for four great years of hard work. Team members recognized were: Wren Tolen, Casey Sweatman, Maggie Strange, Courtney Ray, Tye Humphrey, Kelly Critten, Alex Burge, Lacey Dixon, Kathryn Everly, Dennelle Rhoades, Amy Hudlemeyer, Jennifer Guffey, Kelsha Bundy, Ayrica Batson, Kinsey Batson, Maria Burge, Taylor Henderson, Katie Jarboe and Trisha Sprague. Coach Lin handed out a number of special awards to the following players: Amy Hudlemeyer, two-pt. FG % and Most Improved; Ayrica Batson, two-pt. FG % and FT %; Kelsha Bundy, two-pt. FG % and rebounding; Taylor Henderson, assists and steals; Katie Jarboe, assists, steals, FT % and Defensive Player of the Year; Kinsey Batson, assists and rebounds, and Lions All-Star selection; Maria Burge, two-pt. FG %, rebounds, and KMZU Dream Team selection; and Trisha Sprague, rebounds, two-pt. FG %, FT %, steals, KAAN All-Star, KMZU Dream Team, KKWK All-Star and Lions All-Star. Sprague was a four-year letterwinner, and as reported earlier made the MBCA All-State team.
