Funeral services and burial for Jack Somerville were held in Owensboro, Ken., on Friday, March 17.

John R. (Jack) Somerville, Jr., 81, died in Owensboro, Ken., on Tuesday, March 14, 2006.

Mr. Somerville was born at Jameson on Oct. 2, 1924, to John and Edna Somerville. He attended the Jameson schools for 12 years. Upon highschool graduation as valedictorian in 1941, he attended Missouri University. While there, he was called to the Army during WWII. He served in Germany. After the war, he entered the university and graduated. His degree was in electrical engineering.

After college, Mr. Somerville attended the General Electric Corporation’s training program. Upon completion he worked in Owensboro, Ken., until his retirement. During that time, he was in the Kentucky National Guard and was called to duty in the Korean War. Upon his return, he retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Somerville helped to secure a college at Owensboro, as well as being active in other community organizations. He served on numerous church boards and was a deacon at the First Baptist Church, Owensboro.

Mr. Somerville was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita. They would have been married 50 years this May. Other survivors include two daughters, Patricia Jones and Linda Henkel; one son, John Powers Somerville; one brother, Bill Somerville, Arlington, Va.; one sister, Barbara Somerville Foley, Gallatin and four grandchildren.
