Graveside services and burial for Martha Richardson were held Monday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Gallatin. Arrangements are by McWilliams Funeral Home at Gallatin.
Martha Richardson, 88, Gaithersburg, Md., formerly of Gallatin, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg .
Mrs. Richardson was born April 22, 1917, to Alexander and Olive (Barlow) Richardson in Louisiana. She attended school in Gallatin, where her grandmother, Cora Hemry Barlow, was principal. She graduated from Westport High School in Kansas City. She attended Vassar College for two years before receiving her degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She later attended Kansas State University for her masters degree and then the University of Missouri in Columbia for her doctorate in chemistry.
Mrs. Richardson was the head of the nutrition department for Utah State University at Salt Lake City. In 1953, she moved to Beltsville, Md., where she worked with the Department of Agriculture for many years, eventually working in the Agriculture Research Center in the consumer services division. She retired from government work in 1980, after over 30 years of service, and moved to Gaithersburg, Md. For the past 10 years she was a resident at the Wilson Health Care Center, an assisted living complex, in Gaithersburg.
Mrs. Richardson was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution.
