Stanberry’s Marci Luke banked in a running shot from the top of the free throw line with 7.5 seconds left last Friday night and that proved to be the difference as the SHS Lady Bulldogs handed Gallatin’s girls their third Grand River Conference loss by four points or less.

Gallatin, which finished the season 5-3 in league play, led 36-31 with 4:26 to play after Taylor Henderson hit a set shot from near the free throw line, but Holli Sullins answered for Stanberry with a three-pointer. Another SHS bucket from a GHS turnover knotted the score.

Gallatin called time out after Luke’s go-ahead basket and set up an in-bounds play to go the length of the floor. With fouls to spare before putting their opponents on the foul line, Stanberry’s girls made the GHS Lady Bulldogs expend valuable energy and half the remaining clock getting the ball across the halfcourt line. Courtney Ray’s shot from the wing failed to beat the clock and hit iron before bouncing away.

Stanberry used a 13-0 run, spanning the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second period, to take a 15-4 lead but Gallatin fought back to within 22-16 at the break, despite committing 12 turnovers in the first half.

Gallatin outshot Stanberry from the field, 46% to 34%, but Stanberry made three treys in a rare contest in which Gallatin did not attempt a three-point shot. Gallatin also held a one rebound edge, 18 to 17.

Kinsey Batson shot 56% from the field (5 of 9) to finish with 12 points for Gallatin. Kelsha Bundy nailed 4 of 5 shots and finished with eight points. Katie Jarboe scored all six of her points during a first half GHS comeback. Maria Burge finished with five points for Gallatin.

Gallatin is assured of at least a tie for third place in league standings. Stanberry, at 5-2, faces King City Thursday in a makeup game at King City. Should King City come away a winner, there will be a four-way tie for second place in the final standings. Hamilton holds the league trump card with a 6-1 record, but must travel to Worth County on Friday to make up a Jan. 20 postponement.

Low-scoring affair

LeBlond’s Lady Eagles edged the Lady Bulldogs in a low-scoring affair Tuesday night in St. Joe. Neither team managed a double-figure quarter and the host Eagles came away with a 28-17 non-conference victory.

Bundy’s seven points were a GHS high. The two teams combined for only 18 field goals, 11 by LeBlond and seven by Gallatin.

The Lady Bulldogs enter Class 2, District 16 play as the #4 seed, and will play #5 Maysville in their opening round game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The winner will face top-seeded and defending district champion Tarkio at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday.

In their only meeting of the season, Maysville edged Gallatin by three points on the MHS court.
