Maysville’s boys grabbed their first Grand River Conference victory of the season Tuesday night at the expense of Gallatin, sending the Bulldogs to a 56-54 defeat, and in doing so taking some of the luster off Friday’s anticipated match up with South Harrison.
The Bulldogs pooled scoring efforts for a 23-point fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to totally erase an 11-point (49-38) lead built by the Wolverines. Maysville countered Gallatin’s charge with too many easy buckets underneath in transition.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 49-44 but the Wolverines quickly went back in front, 55-46, with 1:33 left. Less than a minute later, it was 55-51. Andrew Adkison scored for Gallatin on a baseline layup following a steal to make it a one-possession game. Kevin Turley came off bench to score seven points in the final period.
Fouled on another drive with 15 seconds left, Adkison dumped in one of two free throw tries to slice the lead to 55-54. The Wolverines rebounded the second foul shot and just managed to call a time out before losing the ball on a turnover.
Matt Jundy nailed the second of a two-shot foul for a 56-54 MHS advantage. Dillon Bird got two good looks at the basket from beyond the three-point arc in the closing moments, but both shots hit iron and bounded away.
Top scorers for Gallatin, now 3-2 in the league, were Adkison with 24 points and Nic Burrell with 17.
Maysville, 1-4 in conference play, put three players in double figures—Jundy and Alex Barry each with 14, and Travis Ellis with 12.
Albany scored 24 points in the opening quarter on Saturday, but managed only 35 points the rest of the way, and fell to Gallatin, 70-59, in a GRC game made up from January.
Down 24-18 after the first quarter, the Bulldogs slowly took control of the tempo and grabbed the lead to stay after a key third quarter sequence. Bird fired in a three-pointer to break a tie, and a shove underneath after the shot gave the ball back to the Bulldogs. Burrell responded with a trey. Kyle Andrew scored off a lob pass from Brett Wilkinson and was fouled. He hit the first attempt, missed the second, but Adkison got the putback that put the Dogs comfortably in front, 47-37.
Burrell led the Bulldogs with 22 points, followed closely by Adkison with 21. Andrew added 10 for Gallatin. A hot hand by Corey Youngclaus produced a 27-point effort for the Warriors.
Gallatin defeated King City, 45-40, last Friday in a league skirmish. Adkison and Burrell finished with 18 and 13 points, respectively, in the win.
The Bulldogs host South Harrison, unbeaten and 4-0 in the league, on Friday, and will welcome surging Princeton on Tuesday.
