Gallatin wrestlers took on all comers and came away undefeated champions from Saturday’s dual-style tournament held at Albany High School. The Bulldogs notched a 5-0 record in the competition that launches them into this weekend’s district tournament at Cameron.
"This was the best these kids have wrestled all year," said Bulldog head wrestling coach Phillip Limb. "Everyone had a part in bringing home this trophy," he added. "No one person was the key to winning this tournament."
Under the tournament format, eight teams were equally divided into two round-robin pools. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the semifinal round. Winners there advanced to the championship round.
Gallatin, which finished 3-0 in the pool against West Platte, Rock Port and Albany, advanced and defeated Christ Prep (Kan.) in the semifinal round to set up head-to-head matches against the favored Maryville Spoofhounds.
The Bulldogs upset Maryville, 42-29, in the championship deciding dual. "Beating Maryville was a huge confidence booster for our team, and I think that the kids realize that they can do whatever they set their minds to," said Limb. "Our kids came up big, getting pins where we were not expected to," he added.
Cody Selby (140), Dale Curtis (145), Marc Maillet (152), Devin Robinson (215) and Daniel Horvatin (275) each won contested matches against Spoofhound opponents. Andrew Hood (125) pulled a win through a forfeit.
In order to make it to the championship round, the Bulldogs need a last shot of heroics to beat Albany. Coach Limb describes the situation:
"The final match came down to Nathan Gann (112)," said Limb. "He had to get a pin in order for us to win the dual," he went on. "I was impressed with Nathan because he was under a lot of pressure and he went out there and got a pin. Although everyone was important to this dual win, Nathan was more or less the reliever, and he delivered the save," Coach Limb added.
Marc Maillet, Clayton Baker and Devin Robinson each won all their matches on Saturday. Cody Selby, Riley Rains and Daniel Horvatin each lost only once on the day.
Following are GHS individual records from Saturday, followed by overall records after Tuesday night’s matches with Plattsburg:
Nathan Gann (3-2, 9-11), Andrew Hood (2-3, 6-20), Cody Selby (4-1 only loss to Kansas state medalist, 20-11), Dale Curtis (3-2, 21-13), Marc Maillet (5-0, 26-6), Riley Rains (4-1, 16-13), Bradley Jones (3-2, 4-10), Clayton Baker (5-0, 25-4), Devin Robinson (3-0, 20-10) and Daniel Horvatin (4-1, 20-8).
