Success by individual Gallatin wrestlers translated into a second place finish in Saturday’s Grand River Conference Tournament held at Maysville High School.
The Bulldogs brought home eight medals from the annual conference bragging rights tournament, and amassed 120 points to finish behind host Maysville (187), which won the tournament for the fourth straight year, and eighth time over the last nine seasons.
"With a few different scenarios, we may have been closer to first," GHS wrestling coach Phillip Limb said after the tourney. "There were many highlights that came from this tournament," he added.
Leading the way for Gallatin was sophomore Cody Selby, who captured the championship in the 135-pound weight class with a win over Maysville’s Chris Brebner.
"Cody dominated his weight class in coming away with first," his coach stated.
In other championship matches, Marc Maillet fell by technical fall to South Holt’s Dustin Schuetz in the 145-pound class. Clayton Baker lost to old nemesis Aaron Bridgeman of Maysville in the title match in the 189-pound weight division. Devin Robinson won a pair of matches before losing his title bout in the 215-pound class to Spud Herzog of South Harrison.
The Bulldogs came home with four third place medals. Nathan Gann pinned Albany’s Kevin Wilson in his medal match in the 112-pound class.
"Nathan picked up his first win of the year," said Limb. "This was a huge accomplishment for him."
Andrew Hood, who, said Limb, came so close to making the finals, grabbed third place in the 130-pound class. Dale Ray Curtis finished 3-1 in the tournament and defeated Albany’s Dakota Johnson in the 145-pound weight class. Daniel Horvatin knocked off Tarkio’s Daniel Hogue for third in the heavyweight division.
Final team standings in the GRC Tournament included: 1. Maysville 187, 2. Gallatin 120, 3. Albany 100.5, 4. South Holt 77, 5. Polo 75, 6. Stanberry 59, 7. Hamilton 56, 8. Tarkio 53 and 9. South Harrison 41.
"Overall, this was a great day, and confidence booster going into districts," Coach Limb commented. "Our focus on conditioning this last week has really paid off, as many of our wrestlers were not as winded as usual. I was very proud of the boys’ efforts."
Others participating in the meet for Gallatin were Trey Pyfrom, Riley Rains and Bradley Jones.
Gallatin beat South Holt, 47-23, and took down Stanberry, 45-21, to claim top honors in a double dual held Tuesday night at Oregon. Clayton Baker won both his matches on the night. Rains took down his South Holt opponent. Selby and Maillet were winners in contested matches vs. Stanberry.
The Bulldogs will participate in the Albany Tournament on Saturday, and will host Plattsburg in their final home meet next Tuesday.
