Gallatin wrestlers see their season winding down toward conference, district and state tournaments, and they continue to taste success against some of the area’s best competitors.
Three individual Bulldog wrestlers exited Saturday’s Brookfield Tournament with medals after facing some of their toughest opponents of the season. Gallatin, with ten wrestlers competing on the day, finished eighth out of 11 teams in the tournament won by Marceline.
"This was another tournament that allowed us to see some good competition, and learn from it," Bulldog head wrestling coach Phillip Limb said. "It made us realize some of our weaknesses," he added. "One of these weaknesses is the need to be in better condition. We will need to hit it hard the next three weeks so that everyone will have a shot at making it to Columbia."
Top performer of the day for Gallatin was senior Clayton Baker, who finished 3-0 to capture first place in the 189-pound weight class. Along the way, he pinned Richmond’s Dusty Giles, previously ranked #5 in Class 1, and Carrollton’s Brandon Stark, previously #6 in the 189-pound class. Baker is currently ranked #4 in Class 1 by missouriwrestling.com.
Senior Marc Maillet wrestled to a 3-1 record and third place finish on Saturday. His only loss of the day came to #4 ranked Jay Jackson of Richmond. Maillet is also on the short list of top-rated Class 1 wrestlers in the 152-pound class.
Senior Daniel Horvatin finished 2-2 and in fourth place in the 275-pound class, but came away from the competition with a win by fall over Zane Fields of Richmond, previously the #6 ranked wrestler in the heavyweight division.
Junior Riley Rains finished 2-2 but finished out of the medals in the 160-pound weight class. Junior Devin Robinson won one of three matches in the 215-pound class. Nathan Gann, Andrew Hood, Cody Selby, Dale Ray Curtis and Bradley Jones also competed for the Bulldogs.
Marceline edged Trenton, 161.5 to 143, for the team title, despite having only a pair of individual champions.
Gallatin defeated Brookfield, 39-23, in dual action Tuesday night in Gallatin. Selby, Maillet, Rains and Baker won contested matches for Gallatin.
Maillet upped his season record to 18-4 with Tuesday’s victory. Baker takes a 16-3 record into Saturday’s Grand River Conference Tournament to be held at Maysville High School.
