Much like last Friday’s Hamilton Tournament consolation game, Gallatin’s boys found themselves playing from behind in the second half. A poor night of shooting, from both the field and free throw line, helped pave the way for a 48-38 Hamilton victory in Tuesday night’s game that shuffled the standings in the Grand River
Conference.
The Bulldogs, trying to stay unbeaten in the league, failed to shoot well enough to win. A 2-for-10 night at the foul line proved to be particularly crucial during second half play when the Bulldogs were presented with numerous chances to cut the Hornet lead to a single possession.
Forward Eric Fairchild converted a three-point play, basket and free throw, at the 5:15 mark of the final quarter to send the Hornets on their way. Bulldogs starters left the floor under the burden of a nine-point deficit with 2:26 left to play.
Andrew Adkison scored nine of his team-high 21 points for Gallatin in the fourth quarter. Nic Burrell added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-1 in the conference.
The Hornets, now 2-1 in conference play, came at the Bulldogs with too much offense, from too many directions. Fairchild scored 14 to lead a trio into double figures. Kevin Holt added 11 for the Hornets. Geoff Whitt contributed 10 points for the winners.
The Bulldogs travel to King City Friday night to take on the Wildkats in GRC action. King City fell to South Holt in Saturdays’ third place game of the King City Tournament, but the Wildkats upset Albany, 45-40, Tuesday night to move to 1-2 in league play.
The Wildkats are led by senior Colby Gibson, the only returning starter from last season’s 25-4 squad that lost to Jefferson in the Class 1 sectional round. Gibson recently smoked Mid-Buchanan for 34 points in a semifinal KC Tournament game.
Gallatin’s marathon week continues Saturday at 5 p.m. when the Bulldogs face Albany at home in a game postponed from Jan. 20. The Warriors are 1-1 in the GRC following Tuesday night’s result.
League leader South Harrison (2-0), travels to Stanberry on Friday. Worth County, 2-1, meets 2-1 Princeton at Mercer. Albany travels to 0-3 Maysville.
