The Daviess and Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation Districts will receive $404,333 over the next five years in order to address agricultural nonpoint source pollution of the Hickory Creek and its adjoining tributaries. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has allocated a state AgNPS SALT grant and a federal Clean Water Act Section 319 grant to fund the five year project.
The money will be used to help fund the implementation of conservation practices to reduce soil erosion and nutrient runoff. “These projects allow farmers the opportunity to install best management practices so clean water and production agriculture to exist in harmony,” says AgNPS SALT Project Manger Kenny Struemph. Portions of the grants will also be used to present educational events to local residents and at area schools to raise public awareness of soil and water conservation issues. Statewide, AgNPS SALT projects have been helping local people solve local problems since 1997. Eleven projects have been completed and 67 are currently receiving funding. For more information, call the Daviess or Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District office.
