“Daviess County organizes the first regiment of cavalry of the Missouri State Militia under James McFerran as Colonel.” That must have been the headlines in April 1862. The roar of the signal gun at Fort Sumter had scarcely died away before the call to arms resounded in every village and hamlet throughout the land. Daviess County is divided in sentiment, but a majority seem to be in favor of the Union cause. In the 1st Regiment Cavalry, there are three companies: Company A, with Capt. Joseph H. McGee; Company B, with Capt. William H. Folmsbee, and Company G, under Capt. John Ballinger. [Information from “The History of Daviess County 1882,” by the Daviess County Historical Society.]
The Civil War is a topic of interest in many families when talking about a family’s history. For this reason, the Daviess County Genealogical Society is proud to announce that the Civil War will be the main program focus at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Country Cupboard in Jamesport. Dave Stark, former President of the Daviess County Historical Society, will be the speaker, bringing a host of informative information about the county and its residents during the years of 1861-1865. Everyone is invited. For more information or to find out if someone in your family was involved in this war, contact Genealogy Society President Lanita Sconce Smith at 660-684-6174.
