Any fears Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs had about their ability to grab an elusive victory at Worth County on Friday evaporated like a puff of smoke after a 26-point scoring outbreak in the second quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs’ 2006 Grand River Conference debut was a smashing success as they rolled over the Lady Tigers, 74-56, to earn their first win at Grant City since the 1999-2000 season.

Gallatin’s margin of victory, 18 points, was the most over a Worth County girls team since 1992, when the Lady Bulldogs delivered a 15-point road victory. The Lady Bulldog total was also the most points scored by a GHS girls team in league in several seasons.

Worth County took a 11-10 lead after the first quarter but Gallatin caught fire with 26 points in the second and 20 more coming out of the halftime break. The Lady Bulldogs led, comfortably, 56-38, moving into the final period.

Senior Trisha Sprague matched her career-high of 27 points (vs. Hamilton in 04-05) on the strength of 5-for-7 shooting from the three-point arc. She also led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, and chalked up a team-high four steals.

Kinsey Batson added 12 points for Gallatin, along with six assists. Ayrica Batson came off the bench to score nine points. Katie Jarboe and Taylor Henderson each chalked up four assists for the Lady Bulldogs, who moved to 1-0 in the league and 8-1 overall.

The Lady Bulldogs shot a respectable 43%, 32-of-74, from the field in the contest.

Following action in the Lawson Tournament, Gallatin’s girls will host Plattsburg next Tuesday before jumping back into GRC play at home on Jan. 20 against Albany.

Gallatin’s boys matched the Lady Bulldogs in scoring success Friday night, but did so by finishing in a rush.

The Bulldogs rang up 27 points in the final eight minutes of action on their way to a 74-49 decision over the Tigers in nightcap.

Nic Burrell canned four treys and finished with a career-high 28 points in Gallatin’s winning effort. Andrew Adkison poured in 25 points from the low post. Brett Wilkinson added 12 points in support.

The Bulldogs, 8-1 on the season heading into the Lawson Tournament, face a pair of tough tests next week as they resume their regular season schedule. The Dogs will host the Plattsburg Tigers on Tuesday, then welcome Albany in a key Grand River Conference clash on Friday.

The Warriors, 6-3, sport a pair of lop-sided losses to Class 1, top-ranked Jefferson. Albany beat North Nodaway by two points in the semifinal round of the Albany Tournament, but fell to the Mustangs in overtime in a regular-season tilt prior to the Christmas break.

The Warriors, seeded second in this week’s Stanberry Tournament, took on Mound City in first-round action last night (Tuesday). It’s likely that Albany will face top-seeded Jefferson for a third time in Saturday’s championship.

Plattsburg took a 5-5 record into this week’s South Harrison Tournament after a 70-46 loss to St. Joe LeBlond last Friday night. The Tigers are the #1 seed at South Harrison.
