Gallatin varsity basketball teams found mixed results waiting at the end of their opening round of the 12th Annual Lawson Invitational Tournament on Tuesday.

With the toughest draw in the girls’ bracket, the #6 seeded Lady Bulldogs pulled a big upset with a 42-31 victory over #3 Lawson in the evening opener. The #5 Bulldog boys struggled in the middle stages of their game against #4 Richmond and saw an eight-game win streak grind to a halt after a 55-44 setback.

The Lady Bulldogs face off against #2 unbeaten and state-ranked Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The rival Lady Hornets, ranked #3 in Class 3, moved to 11-0 with a 42-31 victory over Carrollton in Monday’s opening round. The winner of Thursday’s clash will likely face six-time defending Lawson Tournament champion Smithville, ranked #2 in Class 3, in Saturday night’s championship.

The GHS girls, winners now of seven straight, throttled the host Lady Cardinals to the tune of a 15-3 scoring spread in the fourth quarter to come away victors. Gallatin led, 20-17, at the break, but Lawson rallied to take a 28-27 advantage into the final period.

Trisha Sprague and Kinsey Batson scored 15 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the Lady Bulldogs into the semifinal round.

Gallatin’s boys fell behind early and trailed throughout the first quarter as they struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive end, but were able to knot the contest at 21-21 by intermission. The Dogs came out cold in the third period and that proved to be the difference as the Spartans claimed a 36-26 lead they would never relinquish.

Nic Burrell and Andrew Adkison upheld their scoring averages with 19 and 18 points, respectively, but the Spartans countered with 22 points from sophomore forward Josh Edelbrock and 19 points from junior forward Corey Thomas.

The Bulldogs will face another MRVC conference opponent, Lexington, tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. in the consolation bracket. A win puts the Dogs in Friday’s 6:30 consolation final.
