One day a poor boy selling things door to door to pay his way through school, found himself with only one dime left and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house but he lost his nerve when a pretty, young lady, opened the door. Being somewhat embarrassed, instead of a meal he asked only for a glass of milk.

He drank it very slowly to make it last and, finally, he asked: "How much do I owe you?"

"You don’t owe me anything," she replied. "My mother taught me to never accept pay for a kindness."

He said: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had just about reached the point where he wanted to give up and quit. So he didn’t quit.

Many year’s later that same young, thoughtful woman became critically ill. Her doctors were baffled to the point and, in desperation, they finally decided to send her to a big city’s medical complex where some of the finest doctors in the land were part of its top-rated staff. They immediately began to study her illness, hoping for some answers.

A Dr. Howard Kelly was one of those on staff who was assigned to her case for consultation and study. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital and entered her room, even though he was still dressed in his surgical gown.

He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her. From that day on he gave her special attention. After quite a struggle, the battle was won. Next, he requested the business office to pass her final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.

She feared to open it for she was certain it would take the rest of her life to pay for it, but something caught her eye on the edge of the statement. She read these words:

"Paid in full with one glass of milk." Signed by Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank you, God that Your love has spread through human hearts and hands."

There is a saying that goes something like this: "Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will know you have made the world a better place – and isn’t that what life is all about?"

I love this story obtained from Internet. I think it will help us all as we enter the Blessed Christmas season.
