Gallatin and Maysville battled before the second-seeded Bulldogs took charge
Credit the first upset in the 29th Annual Gallatin Invitational to the newest team in the tournament field.
The sixth-seeded Newtown-Harris boys held #3 Hamilton scoreless for a five-minute stretch of the fourth quarter, and overcame an eight-point deficit to win, 45-44, in Monday’s first round action. Newtown, one of the youngest teams in the field with two freshmen starters, advances to play Gallatin, Thursday at 8:15 in the semifinal round.
Freshman Canaan Fairley fueled the Tiger rally with a three-pointer that gave Newtown the lead with four minutes left to play, and iced the game for the Tigers after hitting six of six free throw attempts down the stretch.
In other action Monday night, Gallatin’s girls fell behind off the tipoff but chalked up 15 unanswered points and rolled to a 62-42 victory over Newtown-Harris. Trisha Sprague led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points, followed by Katie Jarboe with 13 and Kinsey Batson with 11.
Hamilton’s top-seeded girls blasted Winston, 67-8, to tipoff the tournament. Senior center Elizabeth Vollmer tossed in 26 points to lead the Lady Hornets.
South Harrison’s #1 seeded boys raced past Gilman City, 64-24, in the nightcap to earn a spot in Thursday’s semifinals. Matt Shipers paced the winners with 18 points. Blake Johnson canned 10 for the Hawks.
Gallatin and Maysville battled through a sloppy, foul-filled first half Tuesday night before the second-seeded Bulldogs took charge and pulled away to win, 55-39. The two teams combined for 29 first half fouls 16 by Gallatin and 13 by Maysville.
Andrew Adkison scored 10 straight points during a three minute stretch of the fourth quarter, and finished with a game-high 22 for Gallatin. Nic Burrell added 16.
In other boys action, #5 Trenton led all the way before posting an upset of #4 Winston, 48-37.
Fourth-seeded Gilman City girls passed their first round test with a 59-47 victory over Maysville as three Lady Hawks broke into double figures. Whitney Houser scored 17, Monica Wilson chipped in 16 and Kayla Payne added 13 in a strong Lady Hawk effort.
Third-seeded Trenton blew past South Harrison, 66-30, in Tuesday’s late game.
Loser’s bracket games tonight (Wednesday) feature the Newtown-Harris girls against South Harrison at 4:30, Gilman City boys vs. Winston at 5:45, Winston girls against Maysville at 7:00, and Hamilton boys vs. Maysville at 8:15.
Thursday’s semifinal round pits top-seeded Hamilton’s girls against #4 Gilman City at 4:30, top-ranked South Harrison boys against #5 Trenton at 5:45, #2 Gallatin girls against #3 Trenton at 7:00, and #2 Gallatin boys against #6 Newtown-Harris at 8:15.
