The Gallatin FFA Chapter sent a large number of freshman and sophomores to the annual NWMSU fall agriculture contests in Maryville on Oct. 13. Students from Gallatin did well in the events. Sophomore students judged dairy cattle. Teams placed third, sixth, and twelfth.

Kaley Sheldon was the third top individual in the contest and Lacy Edwards was fifth overall out of over 120 competitors. The FFA knowledge team also placed third. This freshman team was made up of Phillip Arnold, Kaddie Mott, Courtney Ray, and Megan Chadwick. Phillip Arnold was the top individual in the contest.

Other freshman judged livestock. Time constraints kept the team from being able to give oral reasons, however, the teams still were able to finish in the top half of the over 80 teams. Kyle Croy was the top score from Gallatin, while Chris Huffman, Lee Deutschman, Jacob Gienapp, and Kelly Critten also registered good scores.

Gallatin hosts area Greenhand Initiation

The Gallatin FFA Chapter hosted the Area II FFA Greenhand Initiation on Oct. 19, in the elementary gym. Nearly 500 students, members, and guests attended the event. Area II president Sabrina Barron called the meeting to order and Gallatin’s Hattie Rains, Area II Vice President, called the role of officers.

After the conclusion of opening ceremonies, Gallatin FFA advisor, Dennis Croy, welcomed the crowd. The Area officers then performed two skits for the greenhands. State president, Zach Kinne, spoke to the members about the importance of trying new things.

Greenhands were then initiated into the organization. Later each new member from the twenty-two area schools were introduced to the crowd and presented with their greenhand award. The evening ended with closing ceremonies and chapter pictures.

Knowledge

The Gallatin FFA Chapter recently held their FFA knowledge and creed speaking contests for Freshmen FFA members. The classes have studied facts about the history and workings of the organization. The four highest scores on the knowledge test will comprise the FFA knowledge team that will represent the chapter next spring. Placing first was Kaddie Mott. Courtney Ray and Megan Chadwick tied for second and Phillip Arnold placed fourth. The alternate for the team was Alisa Wilson.

Creed Speaking

The chapter also held its annual creed speaking contest. The winner goes on to represent the chapter while the second place individual gets to participate in the agriculture I public speaking contest. Our winner this year was Alisa Wilson. Phillip Arnold was placed second and the alternate speaker was Kyle Croy. Hattie Rains, Kari Youtsey, and Lacy Edwards served as judges for the contest.
