Northwest Missouri has a new source for up-to-the-minute weather information, a University of Missouri climatologist said.

“We’ve recently upgraded our weather station located at the Hundley-Whaley Center in Albany to real-time status,” said Pat Guinan of the MU Commercial Agriculture program. “We’re now able to provide updated weather data every five minutes instead of only a summary of the day before.”

The Albany station is the eighth in the university’s 22-station network to offer real-time information. A grant from the MU Integrated Pest Management program and support of area partners will allow Guinan to upgrade 10 stations this year, bringing the statewide total to 14.

“The value of a weather station rises exponentially with the availability of the most current data,” Guinan said. “The Albany station will provide real-time values for air temperature, heat index or wind chill, dew point, humidity, wind speed and direction, peak wind gust, and soil temperature at three depths under bare soil and crop residues.”

Summary information for the day, such as maximum and minimum temperatures, total precipitation, and sunrise and sunset times, also is displayed.

Although he has not yet determined which six additional stations will be upgraded to real-time status, Guinan said he hopes to have all updates completed by the end of the year.
