Funeral services for Alvin Stretch were held Saturday at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Burial was at Old Scotland Cemetery, Jameson. Memorials may be made to the Gallatin Senior Citizen’s Center.
Alvin Eugene Stretch, 83, Jamesport, died Sept. 7, 2005, at Liberty Hospital.
Mr. Stretch was born Feb. 20, 1922, to Charles Stretch and Rose Anne Croy in the Old Scotland community in rural Daviess County.
A lifelong farmer, he grew up on the family farm near Jamesport.
On Oct. 28, 1942, he joined the armed services where he was assigned to Squadron “E” 3706th Army Air Force Base Unit in Camp Fannin, Tex. He served more than three years during World War II and received several decorations and citations before his separation from the service in February of 1946.
On March 20, 1948, in Troy, Kan., he was united in marriage to Viva Lovell. They were married for 43 years before her death in 1988.
In 1971, Mr. Stretch began driving a bus for the Older American Transportation Service. He drove for 20 years before retiring in 1991.
Mr. Stretch was a member of the National Farmer’s Organization, American Legion Post #31, and was on the board of directors for the Green Hills Human Resources and Gallatin Senior Citizen’s Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Otis Stretch, and a great-granddaughter, Kersten Cox.
Survivors include two sons, Ross Stretch of Dittmer, and Daryl Stretch of Jamesport; one daughter, Sheryl Cox of Carrollton; one brother, Harold and Juanita Stretch of Bolivar; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
