It was the final point races of the season and it was championship night for the late models and junior hobby stock cars in a Labor Day holiday weekend racing program that drew 85 race cars to the Winston Speedway.

The track will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 10, and the championship races in the remaining four classes along with the Touring O’Reilly MLRA Late Model cars that will run a 40-lap feature $2,500 to win event plus qualifying heats.

The point champions for 2005 are Vic Austin of Avondale, late models; Bud Wilson, Trenton, IMCA modified; Jason Ryun, Gladstone, grand nationals; Jon Boller, Jr., St. Joseph, stock cars; John Miller, Excelsior Springs, hobby stocks.

Austin also won the late model championship for 2005 as he held off Dale Eaton of St. Joseph. The late models ran their championship ahead of the other divisions so the cars and drivers who want to, may try to qualify with the O’Reilly touring late models.

The 13 late models on hand ran a 12-lap final point race prior to their championship feature Saturday night and then were lined up according to final points for their feature show.

Also running their championship Saturday were the junior hobby stocks and Mike Youngs of Coffey carried off championship honors in the 12 to 16-age class. It was junior division’s final appearance of the season.

The 18-car IMCA modified feature was a disaster as it drew 10 caution flags and ended up running only 11 laps because of the time limit in a green, white, checker finish. But that was enough for point champ Bud Wilson of Trenton to come from 12th to the front and record his third win of the season and first since taking the Mid-Season crown.

Another race that caught the clock was the 15-car hobby stock feature that went only four laps because of numerous yellow flags and a red flag. John Miller of Excelsior Springs came from the second row to win the short race. It was only the second feature win for Miller, but he reigned as the point champ over fellow Excelsior Springs driver Matt Marrant.

In perhaps the best race of the night, Eddie Schwope III of St. Joseph, making only his second appearance of the season, hustled up front on the opening lap and then spent the rest of the race holding off challenges from Jon Boller, Jr., and Thomas Roberts of Kidder. Roberts was second and Boller finished fourth to win the point derby by four over Roberts.

Jason Ryun of Gladstone didn’t even have to show up in the feature to win the point championship in the grand national division. Because of mechanical problems he did bring his No. 27 car out for the feature but he got the eighth place points but no pay.

All four championship divisions of races will run straight up according to points on Sept. 17.

In a great move by Winston Speedway owners Ted Morgan and Gene Stigall, a silent prayer was held for the victims of the hurricane and the track’s co-announcer Huey Jacobs, a race driver on Friday nights, made comments about a free will offering to be taken for the family of Bob Besteen of Osborn.

Besteen, a firefighter and worker at the track, was killed when a push car ran over him in the pits at the Osborn circle track Friday night.

Fans, drivers and co-owners pitched in $847.39 in a collection taken by drivers during the intermission. The money will be taken to Besteen’s family.
