Chad Shaw of Trimble celebrated his 27th birthday of June 24 in a big way during the weekend as he picked up a Saturday night IMCA modified feature championship, his first, and one night earlier won his first feature at the US 36 Raceways in Osborn.
Shaw has been in the top five times this season and runner-up once but never a checker flag until this past weekend when he collected two.
Shaw, the current points leader at Winston, started on the inside of the fifth row and quietly worked his way to the front, grabbing the lead with seven laps to go. Dale Marriott of Brookfield, back from early season knee surgery, was second and Chad Houston of Jamesport was third.
Scott Martin of Independence spun early in the race, but climbed back into contention with three laps remaining and won his first Grand National feature of the season. Point leader Jason Ryun of Gladstone, the point leader, was second.
Vic Austin started on the pole and never lost the lead in winning his second Late Model feature of the season. Austin of Avondale has a two-point lead over Tommy Cordray of browning who was third.
It was the third feature win of Thomas Roberts of Kidder, who like Shaw, scored a weekend sweep at the US 36 Raceways and Winston. Roberts started front row outside and zipped to the front before a half lap was done.
It doesn’t seem to matter where Steve Hacker of Chillicothe starts in the 4-cyclinder Hobby Stocks. He was lined up on the fourth row and weaved his way to the front with five laps left to win his sixth feature of the season, which includes last week’s Mid-Season title.
Jacob Youngs of Coffey won the Junior Hobby Stock feature that included two women drivers in the 12 to 16 age group while Hunter Marriott of Brookfield, 13-year-old son of IMCA driver Dale Marriott, won for the sixth time in the Junior Stock division.
A total of 84 cars were on hand for the racing program.
This Saturday night’s racing program includes the Coke Clash in the Flora Stigall Memorial racing program. A giant fireworks show will follow the racing program.
The three-eights mile dirt oval of the Winston Speedway is located 10 miles north of Cameron on I-35 at exit 64. Hot laps are at 6:30 and racing at 7 p.m.
