Gallatin’s boys golf team, led by a medalist finish from senior Aaron Everly, turned in their fifth consecutive top ten finish in the MSHSAA Class 1 Golf Championship Tuesday, finishing sixth

The Bulldogs, after shooting 349 as a team on Monday, came back with a combined total of 357 on Tuesday. None of the top ten teams were able to shave any strokes off their Monday totals on Tuesday. Tipton, which shot 325 on the first day, came back with 330 Tuesday to win the team title by 15 strokes over Marceline, which held on to the runnerup spot.

While many golfers struggled Tuesday, Everly was a model of consistency. He shot an 18-hole total of 80 on Monday and came back with a round of 81 yesterday to finish in a tie for 14th place. The top 15 individual golfers earn medals at the state level.

Junior Dillon Bird was also consistent, shooting rounds of 83 and 85 (168) and finishing in a tie for 31st place. Senior Garett Houghton carded rounds of 85 and 93 (178) and wound up in a tie for 56th place. Senior Sean Wood shot 199 for the tournament (101-98). Senior Jake Gardner showed good improvement on the second day, shooting 98 to go with his opening round of 107.

Coach Elbert offered these comments about his team: “I was really glad Aaron finished in the top 15. He has been a dedicated golfer and practice player the last four years and deserved it. We would have liked to have brought home a top four finish and trophy but came up short. Our guys did have a good week of practice in preparing for the tournament and I appreciate their efforts.

“Dillon played pretty well but didn’t hit enough greens or putt well enough. Hopefully he will get a chance next year to medal. Garett played pretty well the first day but struggled on his first nine Tuesday. Sean and Jake bounced back on Tuesday from tough rounds on Monday.”

Albany’s Corey Youngclaus, a junior, was the area’s top individual golfer. He posted a two-day total of 157 and finished tied for 5th in the medalist race. Albany finished 11th as a team. Maysville’s Justin Pearl shot 168 to finish in a tie with Gallatin’s Bird.

Winston senior Cody Lang carded rounds of 94 and 88 and finished tied for 67th place.
