A Soldier from Jameson is learning basic military customs, skills and benefits as part of a Missouri National Guard program designed to prepare new troops for initial entry training.

Pvt. Cody Cook, Detachment 1, Headquarters, Headquarters Service Battery, 129th Field Artillery Battalion, is taking part in those activities and much more as part of the Guard’s Recruit Sustainment Program at a National Guard Armory in St. Joseph.

“I think the best benefit of this program is the physical training. I am also developing my own self-discipline,” said Cook. “I think I’ve gained a sense of responsibility, lots of confidence and strength.”

As part of the Recruit Sustainment Program, Cook is being given instruction in basic soldiering skills, such as physical training, drill and ceremonies, movement techniques, first aid and team building.

“The program helps new Guard members get acclimated to life in the military before they leave for their initial training,” said St. Joseph’s program coordinator, Sgt. Michael Thomas. “We give them a head start over many of their peers, and help get them ready mentally and physically for the challenges they’ll face at their training post.

Cook will be attending Basic Combat Training beginning in June.
