For the ninth consecutive year, the Gallatin High School boys golf team will be competing in the state tournament
For the ninth consecutive year, the Gallatin High School boys golf team will be competing in the state tournament, thanks to a solid team effort Wednesday at the Class 1, District 7 Tournament held at the Plattsburg Country Club.
The Bulldogs, who shot 334 for a whopping 31 stroke victory over runnerup Maysville, claimed their second straight district title behind a one-two punch led by Dillon Bird and Aaron Everly. Bird, who finished fifth in last year’s state tournament, captured the district medalist honor with a round of 77. Everly shot 80 to finish second.
“I thought our 334 team total was pretty good, considering Plattsburg is a course that can present a lot of problems,” said GHS golf coach Chris Elbert. “Dillon followed his strong conference tournament effort with another outstanding round to finish first overall. Aaron had a solid round to finish second,” he added.
Garett Houghton finished sixth for the Bulldogs in individual standings with an 85. He was a tenth place finisher at last season’s Class 1 state tournament. Sean Wood, playing in his first district tournament, placed eleventh for Gallatin with a 92. Jacob Gardner rounded out GHS scores with a 109.
Gallatin golfers will seek their eighth straight Class 1 top ten finish on May 16-17 when they compete in the MSHSAA Class 1 Tournament at Island Green Golf Course in Republic, Mo. Gallatin finished third at state last season, seventh in 2003, fourth in 1998, second in 2001 and first in 1999, 2000 and 2002.
Winston’s Cody Lang will compete for a state medal next week after shooting 84 to finish in a two-way tie for fourth place at district.
JV golfers take second at GRC
Four teams met in Stanberry last Tuesday to vie for the Grand River Conference Junior Varsity Tournament title, and like the varsity unit a day before, South Harrison emerged with a victory over Gallatin.
South Harrison, which posted four individual scores in the 40s, posted a team total of 175 to best Gallatin’s 188. The SHHS Bulldogs finished with three golfers in the top five.
Gallatin’s Ethan Merrigan shot 42 to match his best score of the season and finish one stroke off the medalist pace. He also placed second a year ago. Brandon Meseberg finished fifth in individual standings with a 45. Andy Ward’s 46 was good for sixth. Nick Rogers and Derrick McBroom each shot 55 for the Bulldogs.
