As is often the case in high school golf, a home course advantage means the difference between first and second place. Such was the case Monday in Bethany.

South Harrison beat defending Grand River Conference Gallatin by three strokes, 329 to 332, to win this year’s conference tournament held in Bethany. The SHHS Bulldogs held a six-stroke advantage over Gallatin heading into the final round of nine holes but Gallatin managed to shave three strokes off the lead. Gallatin finished comfortably ahead of third place Maysville, which posted a team total of 360.

“As a team, we were disappointed to finish second, missing out on the title by three strokes,” said Chris Elbert, GHS golf coach. “I felt like overall we competed pretty well,” he added, “with our team scoring close to our season average.”

Three of five GHS golfers evened or bettered their scores in the second round, compared to only Dustin Nail on the winning team.

“When you finish this close, it’s easy to look back on the round and see where a few shots could make a big difference,” Elbert said. “Dillon (Bird) had a great day, finishing with a 35 on the back nine. I was glad to see three of our golfers in the top ten as medalists.”

Bird’s second round total was second only to Albany’s Corey Youngclaus, who shot 33 to finish with a total of 72, good enough for the medalist award. Bird’s runnerup total was 75.

Garett Houghton brought home a fifth place finish for Gallatin with an 81. Aaron Everly also captured an all-conference berth with a seventh-place 84. Sean Wood and Jake Gardner finished with rounds of 92 and 94, respectively, for Gallatin.

Final team scores were: 1. South Harrison 329, 2. Gallatin 332, 3. Maysville 360, 4. Albany 366, 5. Hamilton 384, 6. Worth County 386, 7. King City 418, 8. Stanberry 419, 9. Princeton 423.

Monday’s list of all-conference golfers included: 1. Youngclaus (A) 72, 2. Bird (G) 75, 3. Nail (SH) 78, 4. Tanner Perkins (SH) 80, 5. Houghton (G) 81, 6. Zach Kastelic (SH) 84, 7. Everly (G) 84, 8. Jake Huffaker (M) 85, 9. Tucker Perkins (SH) 87 and 10. Justin Pearl (M) 89.

Gallatin ran its meet record to 9-1 by defeating Winston, 155 to 176, in head-to-head action last Thursday at Daviess County Country Club. Houghton won the medalist award with his low round of the season, a 35. Cody Lang finished runnerup for Winston with a 38. Everly, Bird and Wood all shot rounds of 40. Gardner shot 51.

Gallatin junior varsity scores included: Merrigan 47, McBroom 50, Meseberg 51, Ward 51, Wood 52 and Rogers 53.

The Bulldogs also won a four-team shootout at Stanberry last Wednesday with a 156 to 190 win over runnerup Worth County. Everly garnered the medalist honor with a 35. Bird and Sean Wood carded rounds of 39 to finish co-runnersup. Houghton and Gardner shot 43 and 50, respectively.

Merrigan tied for low jayvee score with a 42. Meseberg shot 48, followed by Ward 52, McBroom 52 and Rogers 62.

Gallatin golfers are in Plattsburg today (Wednesday) for the district tournament. Results from Tuesday’s junior varsity conference meet will appear in next week’s issue.
