Gallatin FCCLA was recognized for their Community Service Project with the Ronald McDonald House Charities at the 2005 Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference held April 3-5 at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center, Columbia. The chapter was also honored as a “Gold” Chapter for being an affiliated chapter for over 50 years. Lindsey Robertson was awarded a Career Cluster scholarship and Missouri FACS scholarship.

Katie Patton attended State Meeting as 2004-2005 State President and presided over general sessions. She also was elected as one of two Missouri National Officer Candidates and will compete for one of ten national officer positions at San Diego in July.

Receiving gold at the State STAR Events and advancing to Nationals in San Diego are as follows: Parliamentary Procedure Sr.—Kyle Hefley, Lindsey Robertson, Brittney Hixson, Kinsey Batson, Whitney Boyd, Ayrica Batson, Emily Michener, and Karly Goll.

Students from Gallatin High School joined delegates from across the state representing over 14,000 members of Missouri FCCLA.

The conference centered on the student-developed theme “Save the Day with FCCLA.” Conference sessions focused on helping members strengthen and expand their abilities as public speakers, project planners, chapter organizers, and responsible family members and community leaders.

Members participated in the Missouri FCCLA “Hand in Hand, We Can” community service project benefitting the Missouri Make-A-Wish Foundation. Celebrating community service and fundraising for the Missouri Make-A-Wish Foundation were the focuses of the “Hand in Hand, We Can” Comedy Night. Proceeds from the comedy night combined with other donations totaled out to approximately $7,000.

The STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events program of FCCLA is based on the belief that all people can be winners. Competition, evaluation, and recognition all stress cooperation as the basis of success. Both youth and adults work together as managers of events and as evaluators of the participants. All participants in STAR Events are awarded a bronze, silver, or gold medal. The top gold recipient(s) advances to the National Leadership Meeting and competition.

Those participating in State STAR Events and receiving bronze are as follows: Illustrated Talk Jr. – Casey Sweatman and Taylor Porter. Those receiving silver are as follows: Parliamentary Procedure Jr. – Kirsten Bowe, Kathryn Everly, Macoe Street, Hannah Huffman, Wren Tolen, Kayle Hefley, and Andy Ward; Chapter Service Project Sr. – Allie Michener and Kara Kloepping; Entrepreneurship Sr. – Melissa Craig. Those receiving gold are as follows: Focus on Children Jr. – Kelly Critten, Tye Humphrey, and Sydney Elbert; Illustrated Talk Sr. – Danielle Critten and Alyssa Strein.

Also attending state were Lindy Stanhope as a voting delegate and STAR Events youth room consultant and Alisha Beck as a voting delegate. Kathy Robertson attended as SEC and Gallatin Advisor. Wanda Batson, Karla Michener, and Sandy Ward attended as chapter parents.

FCCLA is unique among student organizations because projects and events, such as the State Leadership Conference, are planned and run by its student members. It is the only in-school organization with the family as its central focus. Another prime focus of Missouri FCCLA, youth-centered leadership, helps members develop those “skills for life” – planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision-making, and interpersonal communication – needed to help members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
