March meeting
During their March meeting the Gallatin R-5 Board of Education had approved specifications and placed out bids for the football field restroom and concession stand and a 25 x 75 storage room for track equipment. At the April meeting, bids were received from Berry Wood at $106,399 and from Barny Esbeck at $94,600. The board reviewed the bids and tabled the matter for further consideration.
Board members also voted in March to add new aluminum bleachers to the softball field. The bleachers will be centered behind home plate and will provide seating for 250. A target for installing the bleachers has been set for May 1.
Mr. Ruse also reported that handicap parking additions are complete.
During the March meeting, the base salary was raised $750 to bring the base to $27,750. The raise represents a three or four percent increase across the board, depending on the employees position on the salary schedule. At the April meeting, Mr. Ruse presented salary information and recommended a 4% raise for support staff, which the board approved.
March bills in the amount of $189,000 and April bills in the amount of $79,507 were approved for payment.
In other business at the March meeting, the board read and approved policy updates for the third time. The updates involved generic wording modifications by the policy service company and was initiated in January. Board policies may be accessed on the web at gallatin.k12.mo.us.
Mr. Ruse presented the budget.
During closed session the council heard teacher evaluations and offered contracts which are due on May 27.
On the April agenda, investments ranged from 2.5% to 2.7%. Most of the money is in money market accounts at 3.27% interest rate.
Health insurance was presented and approved for the new school year with a 5.7% increase.
Members of the board were asked to provide valet parking during prom.
Mr. Ruse advised the board that the lawsuit being brought by the Community for Equitable Education in Missouri is on hold until after this year’s legislation is finished. The issue will be taken up again in November of next year at the earliest possible date pending the results of the new funding formula proposed by this year’s legislature.
The board was reorganized. No election was held for R-5. Board members are Mike Ward, Sandra Alden, Clint Vanatta, Alan Lunsford, Bill Irby; Vance Hefley, president; Brice Terry, vice-president; Linda Swopes, secretary; and Sherry Kerns, treasurer.
