Gallatin R-5 golfers found room for improvement this past week as they took on a number of schools in a pair of tournaments. The Bulldogs finished third of 11 teams in last Thursday’s Plattsburg Tournament. They were a disappointing ninth of 18 squads participating in Sedalia’s Sacred Heart Tournament on Monday.
“This tournament allows us to compete against a large number of schools we don’t usually get to see during the season,” said GHS golf coach Chris Elbert. “I was disappointed that our two individuals who have played the course before struggled and didn’t play very well,” he added. “Sean (Wood) and Ethan (Merrigan) played pretty well for being on the course for the first time. As a team we need to compete at a higher level if we hope to challenge at conference and district.”
Wood and Aaron Everly each shot rounds of 89 to lead Gallatin efforts in Sedalia. Garett Houghton shot a 95, Merrigan added 97 and Jake Gardner posted a 101.
St. Pius captured the Sacred Heart team title with a total of 319, followed closely by St. Mary’s (322) and Tipton (326). Gallatin golfers combined for a total of 370 to finish in the middle of the pack.
Thursday’s five-man team format pitted golfers against each other in individual, best ball and best shot competition.
Everly came away with a third place finish in the individual competition by shooting 78. Houghton and Dillon Bird teamed to finish second in the best ball competition with a 77. Wood and Gardner combined for a 79 that placed them sixth in best shot competition.
“I felt like we played pretty well as a team and had pretty good scores in each format,” Coach Elbert commented. “The tournament was also beneficial as we will return to Plattsburg on May 4 to compete in the district tournament,” he added.
South Harrison golfers had their best meet of the season on Tuesday, and it showed as the SHHS Bulldogs defeated Gallatin and Albany in tri-meet action in Bethany. South Harrison posted a team score of 153 to beat scores of 173 by both visiting squads.
Everly and Houghton shot rounds of 41 for Gallatin, but that was seven shots off the pace set by South Harrison’s Dustin Nail. Merrigan carded a 45, Gardner added 46 and Wood posted a 50 for Gallatin.
Gallatin junior varsity produced the following scores: Brandon Meseberg 50, Andy Ward 54, Nick Rogers 55, Derrick McBroom 56 and Ross Wood 66.
The Bulldogs will participate in the Cameron Tournament on Friday and return home next Monday to host Stanberry and Plattsburg.
