The weather last week may not reflect it, but according to the calendar it is officially springtime! Spring is a good time to get out and do some of that much needed work on the house and lawn and in the garden. Along with this spring time work, it is also time to locate Daviess County Century Farms.

Protect that investment!

We’ve all heard the saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Most of the time this refers to our health, but it can also be applied to home ownership. For most of us, our home is our biggest investment. By giving our home proper care and attention, we have a better chance of avoiding major headaches and repair bills.

A regular maintenance routine should begin with an overall inspection of the house structure. This includes inspecting the roof, gutters and downspouts, exterior walls, doors, windows, and foundation. With the wet winter we have had and wet spring that we will probably see, inspecting these items are critical.

Prevent crabgrass invasion!

It won’t be long before it will be time to start thinking about lawn care! Apply crabgrass preventer when redbud trees are in full bloom. This is usually during the month of April. The preventer needs to be watered in before it will start to work. Apply a second application of crabgrass preventer by June 15, unless you have used Dimension or Barricade for the April application. These two products normally provide season-long control with a single application. Remember that a good, thick lawn is the best weed preventer and may be all that is needed on a healthy, vigorous lawn.

Search for ‘Century Farms’ continues

The search is on again for Missouri farms that have been in the same family 100 years or more. These farms will be recognized in the Missouri Century Farm program. To qualify, the same family must have owned the farm for 100 years or more as of Dec. 31, 2005. The family shall consist of direct descendants only. The farm must be at least 40 acres of the original land and make a financial contribution to the overall farm income.

There is a $25 fee that is required to cover the costs of certificates and farm signs for approved applicants. The deadline for applications is June 15, 2005. Contact your Daviess County Extension office for more information.
