Katie Patton, a junior at Gallatin High School, participated in the Missouri FCCLA Legislative Shadowing Project on March 1 and 2. This program gives FCCLA members in their junior and senior years of high school the opportunity to shadow one of the legislators and spend a day at the Capitol Building in Jefferson City. Participants expand their capabilities in understanding, interpreting and setting public policy focused on family, work and social issues related to building strong communities.
Members also see how skills learned in family and consumer sciences, as well as those learned and refined in FCCLA, serve to assist individuals as they become an advocate for family, career, and community issues.
Katie shadowed Representative Jim Whorton from House District 3. Throughout the day, Katie attended a committee meeting, was introduced on the House floor, observed the House and Senate in session, and witnessed meetings with constituents.
