The countdown is on for Missouri seniors who want to save money on their medicine and enroll in the Missouri Senior Rx Program. The four-year-old state drug program helps thousands of limited-income seniors save over half on their medicine but eligible seniors must apply by Feb. 28.

“Almost 37 percent, or 6,292 of our members, have already re-enrolled in next year’s plan year that begins in July,” said Jerry Simon, interim executive director of the Missouri Senior Rx Program. “We’re very excited because this represents a gain of almost 10 percent from last year. These seniors trust the program and know firsthand the money they are saving on their medicine.”

Jefferson City resident Norma Bossaller is a re-enrollee who saves $100 per month on medicine with the Missouri Senior Rx Program. “When you’re on a fixed income of $800 a month, that’s a huge savings,” said Bossaller.

“Thousands of other seniors need help with the high cost of prescription drugs and don’t know the Missouri Senior Rx Program exists, or have confused it with the new Medicare drug plan,” said Simon. “We need to reach them before the February 28th deadline. Missouri Senior Rx provides prescription relief for Missouri’s seniors right here, right now. The Medicare plan won’t go into effect until 2006.”

Just about anyone can help an elderly parent, relative or friend apply.

To qualify for the Missouri Senior Rx Program, an individual must be 65 or older with an annual income of up to $17,000 for an individual and $23,000 for a married couple. Seniors cannot receive veterans’ pharmacy benefits, be enrolled in Medicaid or have other prescription drug insurance that is equal to or greater than the Missouri Senior Rx Program.

Applications are available at participating pharmacies, local Area Agencies on Aging, community action agencies, federally qualified health centers and libraries.
