Angel Michael began her duties as the Environmental Public Health Specialist at the Daviess County Health Department on Dec. 20, 2004. Since starting, she has been busy deciding what needed to be done first and what inspections took priority and needed the most attention.
Angel previously worked at the Ray County Health Department as their EPHS. She liked working in Ray County but decided that working in Gallatin would give her more time with her children and less time on the road.
“When I walk into a food establishment and announce that I am the Health Inspector, immediately employees begin acting differently,” states Angel. “Many people are intimidated by my title and fear me shutting down their establishment. My goal, however, is not to shut down food establishments, but to make them safer and cleaner for everyone.”
The Centers for Disease Control estimates that in the United States 76 million people get sick, 300,000 people are hospitalized and 5,000 people die every year from food borne illness. A food borne illness traced back to a food establishment can be damaging to the reputation of that establishment, especially in a small rural community like ours.
Angel also states, “Please do not be intimidated by my presence. I view my job as educational. Yes, I may find several violations in an establishment, however, my real concern is if I see those same violations the next time I come to inspect.”
Angel further states, “I am a resource for anyone involved in a food establishment. Food Handler Classes can be provided if requested.”
Angel will be handling the on-site sewage applications and inspections as well. If you have questions about sewage, if you need an application for a new construction sewage permit or if your system is old and/or failing and you need to replace it, she will help you file the application, answer any questions you may have and issue the permit when the process is complete.
Angel received her B.A. degree in biology from William Jewell College in 1995. She and her husband, Doug, and their four children, Andrew, Caleb, Hayley and Maddison, live near Gallatin.
