The MSHSAA Class 1 Wrestling Championships are a little over three weeks away, but grapplers who took part in Saturday’s Brookfield Tournament have reason to believe they have already seen some of the best competition Class 1 has to offer. The Brookfield Invitational has become one of the premier wrestling tournaments in the area, and with seventeen 2004 individual state medalists and three top ten teams competing in last Saturday’s event, its reputation as a top-notch tournament was cemented for another season.

Four Gallatin wrestlers, Klint Kloepping, Cody Selby, Clayton Baker and Adam Strein, were among the medalists at Saturday’s tournament. Kloepping finished runnerup in the 119-pound class after dropping a 6-0 decision to Richmond’s Morgan Brown, a runnerup in last year’s state tournament and currently the #1 ranked wrestler at 119 pounds in Class 1. Baker also finished with a second place medal after losing his first match of the year, a 7-5 decision, to Richmond’s Ryan Lauck. Baker entered the tournament ranked #3 in the 189-pound class, while Lauck was the #7 wrestler at that weight.

Selby and Strein came away with fourth place medals for Gallatin. Selby lost a 21-7 major decision to Dakota Cashatt of Brookfield in his final match. Strein also fell by major decision, 19-9, to Boonville’s Brett Morris in their 275-pound match. Morris came in as the #2 ranked 275-pounder in Class 1.

The Bulldogs have a make-up dual tonight (Wednesday) at home against Maysville. Gallatin is the host team this Saturday for the Grand River Conference Wrestling Tournament. Other teams competing at GHS will be Albany, Hamilton, Maysville, South Harrison, Stanberry, Tarkio, South Holt and Polo. Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m.
