Funeral services for Arline Whitt were held Monday at McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Gallatin.

Arline Elizabeth Whitt, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at her home in Pittsburg.

Mrs. Whitt was born Aug. 21, 1914, to Jesse N. and Elizabeth “Edmondson” Deaton in Falls City, Neb. She graduated from Falls City High School in 1932. She received her BA degree from Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg in 1937.

After college, Mrs. Whitt began her teaching career in Belgrade Missouri, south of St. Louis. She came to Gallatin in 1940, and started teaching at Old Splawn Ridge, a one-room school. She later transferred to the Gallatin School District, teaching second grades for 26 years. She also taught Remedial Reading in Troy, Kan., for a period of time.

She married Jake Whitt on April 25, 1943, in Gallatin. They made their home on a farm east of Gallatin until 1976, when they sold their farm and retired to town.

Ms. Whitt did volunteer teaching for Adult Literacy until classes were moved out of town. Her teaching career spanned over 38 years.

She as a member of D.A.R., a life-long Christian Scientist, and served the church as both first and second reader in her local branch. She attended the First Christian Church in Gallatin. She was a member of several local clubs and organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake, in 2002; two sisters, Marcile Gerlt, and Lela Turell.

Survivors include two nieces, Virginia Herford, and husband, Tim, Pittsburg, Sharon Whiting, and husband, Jack, Mount Vernon, Wash.; one nephew, Dennis Gerlt, and wife Sally, Pleasanton, Calif.; lifelong friend, Kittie Burris, Trustville, Ala.; and several other nieces and nephews.
