Hamilton’s girls withered early under a fierce Gallatin press and never made up ground as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 52-41 victory Saturday afternoon in the third place game of the Gallatin Invitational Tournament.
Gallatin built a double-digit lead by the middle of the second quarter behind the hot hand of Trisha Sprague, who scored 22 of her tournament-high 27 points in the first half. Hamilton’s Elizabeth Vollmer kept the Lady Hornets in the game with her low-post play on both ends of the floor. She finished with 19 points, including 13 in the second half.
Hamilton cut its deficit to under 10 points in the fourth quarter but a Lindsey Robertson three-point play (layup and free throw) with three minutes left to play lifted the Lady Bulldogs back to a double-figure cushion to stay. Emily Gay pulled down some big defensive rebounds late in the contest. Sprague, who finished hitting eight of nine from the foul line, sealed the win at the free throw line down the stretch.
Brittney Hixson also scored nine points for the Lady Bulldogs and dished out four assists. Sprague also pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds in the contest.
Missed opportunities
Sometimes there’s no reward for giving your all and doing your very best. That was the case Wednesday night for junior guard Kinsey Batson in Gallatin’s 31-30 semifinal loss to South Harrison.
Batson put up three good-looking shots at the end of the game, but none fell. She got the ball near the free throw line with under five seconds remaining and drew contact on a shot that rimmed out with 6/10 of a second left on the clock. Her first free throw attempt hit the front of the rim and rolled off to the side. Her second attempt did a spin move inside the iron but rimmed out as well. Game over.
Turnovers and missed scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter preceded the outcome. Gallatin failed to score in the final 4:30 of the contest. The Lady Bulldogs led, 30-29, when Angie Claycomb hit both ends of a double bonus foul at :10.
Scoring total reflected the game’s defensive nature. Sprague led Gallatin with seven points, followed by Batson and Gay with six each. Sarah Beck paced South Harrison with 11 counters.
THS girls prevail
Trenton’s girls added their third GIT championship in five years by beating South Harrison, 64-51, in Saturday night’s title game. Maysville defeated Tri-County, 61-27, in Friday night’s consolation contest. Gilman City took seventh place in the tournament with a 54-10 win over Winston.
