Led by a pair of state medalists, another state qualifier, and three sectional qualifiers, Gallatin opened its 2004-05 wrestling season last week with a tough meet against always-strong Marceline. The Bulldogs start out with 13 grapplers, 11 at the varsity level, as they prepare to head for Lexington this Saturday for tournament action.

Senior Klint Kloepping (112) grabbed a fifth place medal at last year’s state tournament. He finished with an overall mark of 20-10. Junior Clayton Baker (189) also returns from a fifth place finish at state. He won 19 of 28 matches a year ago. Senior Adam Strein (215), 24-13 last season, participated in the state tournament. Sophomore Riley Rains (140) and juniors Daniel Horvatin (275) and Mark Maillett (160) were sectional qualifiers a year ago.

Gallatin takes to the mats this season with second-year varsity wrestler Logan Corwin (275 JV) and first-time varsity grapplers Devin Robinson (215 JV) and Trey Newberry (152), both sophomores, and freshmen Cody Selby (130), Dale Curtis (135), Stephen Wood (145) and Derrick McBroom (119).

Baker and Strein each won matches last Thursday at Marceline. Baker piled up 16 points to win by technical fall in the 189-pound class. Strein won a 2-1 decision in the 215-pound class. Baker, Strein and Rains (140) won matches Tuesday against Trenton opponents — Baker and Strein by pins and Rains on a 12-1 decision. Robinson and Corwin each pinned opponents in exhibition bouts.

One scheduling change has been announced. The wrestling dual at Plattsburg, originally scheduled for Dec. 16, has been moved to Feb. 8.
